Kobus van der Wath

Kobus is the Founder of Axis Group International and Managing Director of The Beijing Axis (

Kobus has been working in Asia for over 22 years and is based in Beijing. Before founding Axis Group and The Beijing Axis, he was Head of Investment Strategy and Global Market Research for Asia Pacific for Standard Chartered Bank Plc and, prior to that, he was a Senior Strategy Consultant with the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) in Asia. In his early career, he was an Emerging Market Investment Strategist in London; a Treasury Economist with Standard Merchant Bank in Johannesburg; and an Economist with the South African Reserve Bank in Pretoria.

He holds an MBA from INSEAD in France, a Master of Business (I.T.) from Curtin in Australia and BCom Honours degrees in Finance/Investments and Economics, respectively from UJ and Unisa in South Africa.

He is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Cape Town (UCT) Graduate School of Business’ International Strategy Department, teaching ‘Doing Business in China and Asia’. He is also a Fellow at GIBS (Gordon Institute for Business Science, University of Pretoria) in their Centre for Dynamic Markets.

His work is well published, and he has received numerous invitations to present as a keynote speaker and to lead discussions in over 25 countries. He is regarded as a thought leader on the topic of China cross-border business. Kobus was the first person from Africa to publish a book about ‘Doing Business in China’, which was commissioned by the China Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He also published a book in Mandarin called ‘Invest in South Africa’, which was commissioned by the China Ministry of Commerce.


Cheryl Tang

Cheryl is the Director of The Beijing Axis. She has also led the sourcing team since the company's inception and has successfully managed a significant number of projects assisting international companies to procure and invest in China, and in directing Chinese companies who are venturing and sourcing abroad.

Her previous experience includes:

  • Senior Media Planner for J Walter Thomson Advertising Company
  • Co-founder of a Beijing-based skin care boutique specialised in the distribution of European Products

Cheryl holds an MBA in International Business from Birmingham Business School, UK. She also has a BA degree in Marketing Communications from the Communications University of China.

Cheryl is fluent in English, Mandarin and Shanghainese.


Haiwei Huang
Managing Director: Axis Capital Advisory

Haiwei joined The Beijing Axis as a consultant in March 2006. He currently serves as Managing Director: Axis Capital Advisory. Prior to this, he worked as a consultant in Beijing Axis Procurement as well as Beijing Axis Strategy of The Beijing Axis.

Before joining The Beijing Axis, Haiwei worked as an international business development manager at Zhejiang Chant Instrument and Meter Company, which is part of CHINT Group, responsible for European and American clients. Prior to CHINT, he worked as a sales representative at Shanghai Huaqi Telecommunication Company.

Haiwei studied at London South Bank University in England. He holds a BA Hons degree in Business Administration. Haiwei is fluent in English, Chinese as well as Shanghainese.


Rachel Wu
Director: Procurement

Rachel is a Director of The Beijing Axis. She is the Divisional Head for Procurement, responsible for global business development, all client solutions across the division and overall P&L. She has an international team across Asia, Europe and Africa that reports to her in driving the business forward. Her expertise is in international business, complex negotiations, strategic development and global procurement and supply chain. She has advised numerous Chinese and international clients with their cross-border activities over the past 10 years.

Rachel is from Beijing and has lived and worked in Australia, Singapore and China. She has traveled extensively over the past 15 years and is currently based in Beijing. Before joining The Beijing Axis, she worked in senior roles in management consulting and supply chain and logistics. She holds an MBA from the University of Western Australia in Perth and an Honours in Economics from the Capital University of Economics and Business in Beijing.

She has been a guest lecturer at the University of Cape Town (UCT) Graduate School of Business on international strategy - and has done public speaking in several countries. She is fluent in English and Mandarin.
