JOHANNESBURG – 21 June 2018 – The Beijing Axis hosted a Global Procurement and Supply Chain Roundtable Breakfast on the theme of “China & Asia/BCCs in Global Supply Chains – Capturing the Opportunity”. The event, which was held at the Hilton Sandton, sought to unpack important trends and issues surrounding the procurement community, including: the evolving role of China in global supply chains, balancing global and local procurement, and critical success factors for getting it right.

The roundtable was chaired by Ms. Barbie Co, Director of The Beijing Axis, who welcomed the guests and set forth the objectives for the seminar.

Ms. Barbie Co, Director of The Beijing Axis

Mr. Kobus van der Wath, Founder and Group Managing Director of Axis Group International / The Beijing Axis, highlighted the China/BCC sourcing opportunities through the scope of four key questions: Why? Where? What? And How? He elaborated on China’s manufacturing base, export profile and trade composition, and how these have helped China play a pivotal role in the global manufacturing landscape. He further illustrated China’s broad-based transformation, not only in terms of a rapidly growing (and consumption-driven) middle class, but also its shift to high-value manufacturing and more value-added exports, which has important implications in how companies should recalibrate their global supply chain strategies.

Ms. Rachel Wu, Director: Procurement, unpacked the importance of supplier selection and supplier management, and the intricacies of doing this within the context of China/Asia/BCC sourcing destinations. She explained how invaluable it is to develop a robust supplier database and maintain a strategic approach to supplier relationships, contract management and over-all project management. These will help mitigate risks, optimize supplier performance and generate better returns.
