Monday, 07 May 2018 03:59

BEIJING - 27 Apr 2018 - The Embassy of the Republic of South Africa to the People’s Republic of China held the South African Freedom Day celebration at the South African Embassy in Beijing on 27 April 2018 (Friday).

Ambassador of South Africa to China Her Excellency Ms. Dolana Msimang warmly welcomed the South African and Chinese community in attendance.

The theme for the 2018 Freedom Day celebration is: “The Year of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela: Towards full realization of our freedom through radical socio-economic transformation”.

Freedom Day commemorates South Africa’s first post-apartheid elections held on 27 April 1994. It enabled everyone of voting age (over 18) from any race group, including foreign residents, the ability to vote.

HE Ms. Dolana Msimang (right) invited a South African student representative (center) to cut the celebration cake, along with Minister Plenipotentiary Debora Balatseng (left).

This year, the South African Embassy in Beijing commemorated Freedom Month, which coincides with the centenary of the late first black President of South Africa, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela and Albertina Sisulu, a heroine of the liberation struggle.

As South Africa and China celebrate 20 years of diplomatic relations, the two countries are seeing increasingly closer ties across different areas, for example: there are now more than 2,000 South African students studying in China; China has invested more than USD 25 bn in South Africa, in the process creating more than 100,000 jobs in the country.

The attendees from The Beijing Axis were (L-R): Elvis Qu, Vice President: Axis Capital Advisory; Kobus van der Wath, Founder & Group Managing Director; Rachel Wu, Director: Procurement; and, Haiwei Huang, Managing Director: Axis Capital Advisory.
