Johannesburg, 30 August 2017 - The Beijing Axis hosted an Asia Market Development & Sales Activation Workshop on 30 August 2017, with Norton Rose Fulbright (NRF) at the NRF Auditorium in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The workshop was jointly hosted by The Beijing Axis and Norton Rose Fulbright at the latter’s auditorium in Sandton, Johannesburg’s financial and business centre.

For companies looking to grow their exports and international sales revenue, it is important to keep track of Asia – the largest and most dynamic market in the world today. South African companies must tap the opportunity but there are many challenges to overcome.  The workshop addressed Strategic Imperatives & Practical Issues for Successfully Expanding Sales in China/Asia.

Key topics discussed were as follows:

  • Market Analysis, Research and Planning: overview of the China/Asia landscape; sizing the opportunity; emerging consumption patterns and trends in the world’s largest market; accessing strategic intelligence; due diligence
  • Strategies, Tactics and Action List for Effective Marketing and Sales: key issues in marketing and brand activation/management; social media; business development and sales management; channel management, channel partners and partnerships; e-commerce; culture; negotiations
  • Supply Chain & Logistics: distribution and operational challenges and remedies
  • Enhanced Market Access: inbound investment into China and entering into a Chinese JV
  • Hot Sectors: i.e. agri & agri-processing (i.e. dairy, wine, fruit, nuts, meat, etc.); high-end manufactures (i.e. aerospace components, robotics, etc.); services (i.e. back-office systems, occupational health/safety, aged/health care, flight training, tourism/destination mgmt.); niche technologies (i.e. environment, mine safety, etc.)

Greg Nott, Director of Norton Rose Fulbright, warmly welcomed the attendees.

Kobus van der Wath, Founder and Group Managing Director of The Beijing Axis, opened the session by orienting the audience to the sheer size and unique characteristics of China and Asia.

Elvis Qu, Senior Associate of The Beijing Axis, talked about the growth and development of e-commerce, especially in China.

Barbie Co, Director of The Beijing Axis, unpacked key themes and challenges in doing marketing and brand activation in China and Asia.

Haiwei Huang, Managing Director of Axis Capital Advisory, spoke about Chinese culture and the finer points of negotiation styles in the East.

Milton Osborn, Director of Norton Rose Fulbright, focused on investing in China and the importance of understanding the legal and regulatory frameworks in the country.

The workshop was attended by members of the South Africa business community, with representatives from the Johannesburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI), Wesgro, Sasol, and Merensky, among others.
