During July THE BEIJING AXIS Group MD Kobus van der Wath traveled to Australia for various engagements. On 15-16 July he delivered a presentation to the Aust-Asia Mining Conference in Brisbane, and on 22 and 23 July he chaired the IQPC Mining Supply & Procurement Conference in Perth. On 28 July he delivered a guest lecture to the MBA and EMBA class of the Australian Graduate School of Management in Sydney, discussing the strategic implications of China's rise for Australian firms. And on 29 July he delivered a lecture at a one-day China conference in Sydney entitled 'Managing the Risks of Manufacturing in China.'

Group MD Kobus van der Wath delivered a presentation at the Congress, held from 9 to 11 June, on Chinese mining investments in Africa.

Kobus van der Wath and THE BEIJING AXIS Corporate Office Manager Mitch Cosani traveled to Australia in May, and apart from attending a number of seminars and conferences, Kobus was a panelist at the Association of Mining and Exploration Companies' National Mining Conference in Perth on 22-23 May.

China-Africa Summit Forum on International Investment
and Cooperation in Steel and Nonferrous Industries, (Beijing,
China)
THE BEIJING AXIS participated in
the inaugural forum on 8 and 9 December. The event, hosted by
the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), brought together
entities from the Chinese and South African public and private
sectors 'in order to promote the bilateral cooperation between
enterprises in China and Africa in the steel, mining and nonferrous
metals industries, and to provide a project information platform
for China-Africa investment and economic cooperation, exchange,
communication, and strategic dialogue'.
THE BEIJING AXIS delivered two presentations,
with Edward Wang, Executive Director of China Business Development,
talking about the African business environment and the associated
opportunities and risks, while our China General Manager, Dirk
Kotze, discussed the investment opportunities for investment in
nonferrous metals mining in South Africa.
IBM Global Innovation Outlook Africa Forum (New
York, USA)
On December 4th Julian Hewitt,
THE BEIJING AXIS' Shanghai Office Manager, represented China-Africa
business perspectives at IBM’s Global Innovation
Outlook Africa Forum held in New York. The international event brought together
300 business, political and policy leaders to attend panel discussions
and analysis sessions that looked into IBM’s year-long exploration
of emerging African business trends.
The conference served to highlight the positive dimensions to Africa's
recent economic growth surge that had made the continent an increasingly
more positive investment destination. While commodities were still
strong growth drivers, telecommunications and IT where enabling
new business opportunities and rising income levels had helped
support a fast-growing FMCG sector. The primary outcome was that
increased economic development was Africa’s key to long-term success.

Kobus van der Wath, our Group Managing Director, was asked to
speak at the AGM and give a presentation on the emergence of China
in the world arena. Kobus' presentation was entitled: 'China in
Africa: Strategic Partner or Predator?'

October saw our Group Managing Director, Kobus van der Wath, present at the University of Pretoria's Graduate School of Business breakfast seminar on 'Doing Business in China: Understanding Opportunities and Mitigating Risks'.

October also saw Kobus van der Wath, our Group Managing Director, host a half-day workshop at SAITEX (South African International Trade Exhibition) entitled 'Asian Economic Landscape – An Introduction to Doing Business in Asia'.
